The western parotia or Arfak parotia, is a medium-sized, bird-of-paradise with a medium-length tail. They measure about 28 to 34 cm long, and weighs between 150 and 250 g. Endemic to Indonesia, the western parotia is found only in the mountain forests of Vogelkop and the Wandammen Peninsula of Western New Guinea. Thier habitat is mid montane forests and well-established secondary forests. The male has black plumage with an iridescent structurally coloured golden-green breast shield and triangular silver feathers on its crown.

An exquisitely rendered watercolor of the western parotia is a magnificent bird of paradise found only in the mountain forests of northwestern New Guinea. Barraband painted this work in preparation for Plate 12, “Le Silfilet,” in François Le Vaillant’s Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux de Paradis et des Rolliers, published in 1803. Jacques Barraband’s watercolors of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration.

The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds. A widespread and common species throughout its range, the western parotia is evaluated as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The project was a massive undertaking, which required over 300 finished watercolors. Apart from their undoubted beauty, they display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since.
