As would be expected when there is not sexual dimorphism, these species are monogamous and form pair bonds. This is quite unlike the promiscuous behavior of the rest of the family. All the gorgeous, promiscuous BOPs are closely related, so much so that they may be better considered all the same genus. Under our current classification, there are many intergeneric hybrids known.
Frith & Frith split the recently rediscovered Bronze Parotia Parotia berlepschi as the 39th BOP. And then the recent splits in riflebirds and Lophornias bring the total back of 42 species. In this gallery of three photos below, we can compare a female Victoria Riflebird as she checks out a displaying male who is engaging in loud vocalizations and in a full wing-spread display. These photos of Victoria Riflebird are by Hans & Judy Beste.
This one is now called Vogelkop Lophorina [unfortunately for me, I’ve only heard one]. Superba — this is the widely distributed species in the central mountains of New Guinea — and Lesser Lophorina L. Note that Irestedt et al. argue that superba does not apply to birds from the Vogelkop Mountains, but to those usually called feminina. They establish a new name inopinata for the Vogelkop birds and refer to the Vogelkop Bird-of-paradise as Lophorina niedda. They also call the Greater Bird-of-paradiseLophorina superba. Given that the type of superba has been considered to be from the Vogelkop, I didn’t find their arguments convincing.

Recent biochemical studies show that the three cnemophiline birds-of-paradise are not closely related to BOPs at all (Cracraft & Feinstein 2000) and belong in their own family . That same paper (Cracraft & Feinstein 2000) showed that “MacGregor’s Bird-of-Paradise” Macgregoria pulchra was actually a giant honeyeater, close to Melipotes. That rather startling finding makes completely good sense to me — the bird was not like any other BOP. This means there are four fewer BOPs than had previously been thought. Frith & Beehler , in their major review of this family, listed 42 biological species.
- The entire process of courtship, including the dance, is prolonged and may take almost a day.
- Some females, though, come to montane lodges with feeders.
- The greater superb bird-of-paradise, the Vogelkop superb bird-of-paradise, and the lesser superb bird-of-paradise all possess unique physical attributes.
- In theory, male birds-of-paradise developed all these incredible ornaments and displays because of female sexual selection.
These are the five species of manucode and also two paradigallas . Dawn is also the only time to see the display of Black Sicklebill , a high elevation cloud forest specialist. Until recently, I had not photographed any bird-of-paradise in the wild. My friend Steve Wilson photographed the wild displaying Lesser Bird-of-Paradise during our 1983 visit to Papua New Guinea. Similar to the Riflebirds the male has a delta-shaped breast shield which can be errected. Delivery times should be 1-2 days for the UK and 4-5 days for the USA.
Frequently Asked Questions
The superb bird-of-paradise is widely distributed in forest habitats in Papua New Guinea and this species is not endangered. These birds with fascinating courtship rituals and feathers are listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. However, the conservation status of the Vogelkop superb bird-of-paradise and the lesser superb bird-of-paradise is not listed. The lesser lophorina, lesser superb bird-of-paradise, or rasping bird-of-paradise is a species of passerine bird in the bird-of-paradise family Paradisaeidae. This species of bird communicates during the breeding season by being vocal. The loud cry of the male birds attracts female birds and this loud call is followed by the male bird carrying out an elaborate courtship ritual to persuade females to mate.
You must see the BBC video to observe the frenzy to which the male works himself up in his incredible performance. The superb bird-of-paradise displays sexual dimorphism as males have black plumage, blue-green breasts, and a cape on their back, while females are reddish-brown with a buff ventral region. The size difference between males and females is negligible and competition is extreme for mating. The superb bird-of-paradise is a polygynous bird with unusual courtship displays that involve two phases. The first phase includes simple actions and it is followed by another phase that involves a more elaborate and intense display. The male produces a loud cry to attract the female bird’s attention.
The female may or may not choose to mate, and females often reject a lot of males. The entire process of courtship, including the dance, is prolonged and may take almost a day. After mating, the average litter size is one to three eggs and these are hatched after days.
The lesser superb bird-of-paradise or lesser lophorina is a disputed species of passerine bird in the bird-of-paradise family Paradisaeidae. It is generally considered a subspecies of the superb bird-of-paradise. Molecular evidence, though, has clarified the status of some of the lesser known and more obscure species.
These young birds are referred to as hatchlings when they are first born. The average lifespan of these birds is between five to eight years. Welcome to BirdForum, the internet’s largest birding community with thousands of members from all over the world.
For the forest-floor dancers, one must have a blind and a lot of time and patience. The first films of dancing parotias were acquired in the 1990s and now highlight the BBC film Attenborough in Paradise . My friend Will Betz, working with National Geographic, obtained this shot of a Carola’s Parotia in full display , dancing in its “cape” on the forest floor. Limits of this web media preclude seeing details shown in the original photo, such as the six thin wires being waved from the crown.
Perhaps the most famous members of the family are in the genus Paradisaea, including Blue Bird-of-Paradise . I’ve chosen it among the “best birds of the world” because it is spectacular; has an unworldly “upside-down” display ; and the fact that it is limited to a very small montane area of Papua New Guinea. I finally got photos on my third New Guinea visit , illustrated the fruit-eating propensities of the family and its extraordinary tail . The exact date of the discovery of the superb bird-of-paradise is not known, but the Vogelkop superb bird-of-paradise species was first defined by Ernst Mayr in 1930. At this time it was considered as a subspecies of the greater superb bird-of-paradise.
I have marveled at both of those species in the wild. More outstanding images of BOPs are in Frith & Frith . Again, it is the BBC film Attenborough in Paradise that has remarkable footage of both of these species. The display of Wallace’s Standardwing, which occurs very high in the canopy, was filmed with an ingenious rig. That footage including maneuvers made with the white “standards” attached to the front of its wing. That same Attenborough film has the dawn display of Black Sicklebill, another “top 50” bird, that truncates its body in full display in a way that is almost impossible to believe.

This fact also suggests that all the famous BOPs are closely related despite their widely variable plumages. All of our frames are made in the UK from solid wood and have a varnish or paint finish. See listing photos for details of frame options and an example of how your print would look framed.
It was sealed in plastic with a nice matte black border around the image itself. If you do not want your print framed, select ‘Matted Print Only’ in the frame options drop down list. Although I’ve emphasized the spectacular BOPs, and the extensive sexual dimorphism in these genera, there are primitive birds-of-paradise in which the sexes are similar.
Being sexually dimorphic, males have black plumage with a combination of a blue and green breast shield, while females have a more reddish-brown plumage. The feathers of these birds transform once they initiate the courtship process and the feathers form oval or crescent shapes over their head. As a family the Paradisaeidae are perhaps most the impressive set of birds in the world.
Creamy-breasted Canastero, Asthenes dorbignyi is split into Pale-tailed Canastero, Asthenes huancavelicae, Rusty-vented Canastero, Asthenes dorbignyi, and Dark-winged Canastero, Asthenes arequipae. When the bird-of-paradise was first introduced to Europe in the 15th century, some people related this bird to the phoenix due to its unusual appearance. The name ‘bird-of-paradise’ is derived from early diction which referred to these birds as ‘birds of God’.

Males, in turn, spend almost all their time trying to attract females. This has created incredible sexual dimorphism in the Paradisaeidae, and promoted rapid evolution in male plumages (Christidis & Schodde 1993). The greater superb bird-of-paradise, the Vogelkop superb bird-of-paradise, and the lesser superb bird-of-paradise all possess unique physical attributes. Ultimately, these birds are recognized for their extraordinary plumage.
Yet the gorgeously red-plumaged Paradisaea birds-of-paradise are not among these choices. Only the Blue Bird-of-Paradise made the cut among genus Paradisaea. For the others I considered BOPs in genera Parotia, Cicinnurus, Drepanornis, Epimachus, and Semioptera. Those in the first two genera perform incredible displays on carefully tended dancing grounds on the forest floor. The Drepanornis sicklebills have inverted poses high in a display tree while Epimachus sicklebills and Semioptera standardwing distort into unworldly poses.
The greater superb bird-of-paradise , the Vogelkop superb bird-of-paradise , and the lesser superb bird-of-paradise all belongto the class of Aves and the genus Lophorina. Modified breast shields that form unworldly cravats are features of Wallace’s Standardwing and of what was once called the “Superb Bird-of-Paradise” . Superb Bird-of-Paradise was recently split into 3 species and each of them was re-named as a Lophorina.
This permitted the development of a lek system with females selecting the most gaudy male. This print comes mounted, matted in antique white or black and is also available framed. We use archival matting methods so your print will be held in place with photo corners and will not be fixed to either the mat or the backing board. Thelesser lophorinaorlesser superb bird-of-paradise is a species of passerine bird in the bird-of-paradise family Paradisaeidae. It is endemic to Papua New Guinea. It is sometimes considered a subspecies of the greater lophorina.
Here a female has arrived to watch — she’s the brown unplumed bird in the center, surrounded by two displaying males. There are “better” perches than others, and the male on the “best” perch usually gets the female. It may take years for another male to dislodge the prime male.
After the female approaches, the male spreads its folded cape and breast shield upward around the head which transforms the male into an ellipse shape bird. After the physical transformation, the male bird starts its mating dance, a ‘dance floor’ is prepared by removing dirt and leaves from the branches of the tree. The superb bird-of-paradise mating dance involves snapping the feathers of the tail while hopping and encircling the female to a definite rhythm.
