Chihuahuan Meadowlark Sturnella lilianae (historically referred to as “Lillian’s Meadowlark”) is split from Eastern Meadowlark S. Magna based on morphological, genomic and vocal differences (Lanyon 1995; Barker et al. 2008; Beam et al. 2021; HBW 16; Powell et al. 2014; NACC 2022-C-2; Chesser et al. 2022). Includes auropectoralis (Beam et al. 2021). It is widely distributed throughout the lowlands of New Guinea and nearby islands. Widespread and common throughout its large range, the glossy-mantled manucode is evaluated as least concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. San Diego Zoo has the only captive individual of this species outside of New Guinea.
But vocalizations are not appreciably different (Hunter et al. 1998; Dowsett-Lemaire 2006). The glossy-mantled manucode is medium-sized, around 42 cm long, glossed green, blue and purple black with a red iris, black bill, long graduated tail and somewhat elongated upper breast and neck feathers. The female is a slightly smaller than the male. In appearance, the glossy-mantled manucode resembles and is difficult to distinguished from its nearest relatives, the crinkle-collared and jobi manucodes. Manucodia comrii has a compact and large body approximately 43 cm long, with glossy purple, black and green plumage, red iris and crinkled yellowish-green upper breast and neck feathers.
The Tagula manucode is a species of bird-of-paradise. Based on the December 2017 update is available online here. For further details on possible inaccuracies in the list see Sources & Caveats. A common species in its limited habitat range, the curl-crested manucode is evaluated as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Chinese Cupwing Pnoepyga mutica was split provisionally from P. albiventer (Päckert et al. 2012) based on moderate divergence in mitochondrial DNA and vocalizations. But others have rejected the vocal distinctiveness (Boesman, 2016; HBW/BirdLife). Provisionally treat as a subspecies of P. albiventer pending further evidence.
It has curled head feathering and twisted central tail feathers. Both sexes are similar with a slightly smaller female. The curl-crested manucode is the largest species of manucode, and also the largest and heaviest species in its family in terms of body size, weighing up to 450 grams though its tail is shorter than the black sicklebill. DEL AL Common Reed Warbler African Reed WarblerAcrocephalus baeticatus is lumped with Eurasian Reed WarblerA.
