Tulipa Suaveolens Flower – – Fine art print of a vintage natural history academia illustration,
The male western partoia is shown here displaying his iridescent breast shield and with wiry plumage. Like other birds of paradise, the unusual wiry plumage behind his head is used to attract a female mate in a courtship display. Like other birds-of-paradise, the western parotia is sexually dimorphic. The male has jet black plumage, with striking iridescent scale-like, golden-green breast shields and triangular silver feathers on its crown. The occipital plumes arise from above and behind the eyes, with three long, erectile wire-like plumes with smaller spatulate tips, above and behind each eye.
Males presumably perform a series of courtship displays on terrestrial courts in exploded leks.
Barraband studied under Joseph Malaine and afterward worked as a draftsman in the Gobelin tapestry works. He painted porcelains exhibited at the Paris Salons from 1798 through 1806, and records at Sevres show that he supplied drawings to the factory there in 1806. He also decorated the dining-room in Napoleon’s chateau at St. Cloud. His work for Francois Levaillant was undoubtedly the climax of his career. His drawings for Levaillant’s splendid works placed him at the forefront of French ornithological artists at the beginning of the 19th century.
However, it took until September 1872 before the exuberant L. M. D’Albertis would be the first European collector to penetrate any distance into the Arfaks and as a matter of fact into montane New Guinea as a whole! The Arfak Mountains thus constitute the type locality of numerous widespread upland New Guinea animals and therefore alone are renowned in scientific literature.
An exquisitely rendered watercolor of the western parotia is a magnificent bird of paradise found only in the mountain forests of northwestern New Guinea. Barraband painted this work in preparation for Plate 12, “Le Silfilet,” in François Le Vaillant’s Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux de Paradis et des Rolliers, published in 1803. Jacques Barraband’s watercolors of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration.
The western parotia or Arfak parotia, is a medium-sized, bird-of-paradise with a medium-length tail. They measure about 28 to 34 cm long, and weighs between 150 and 250 g. Endemic to Indonesia, the western parotia is found only in the mountain forests of Vogelkop and the Wandammen Peninsula of Western New Guinea. Thier habitat is mid montane forests and well-established secondary forests. The male has black plumage with an iridescent structurally coloured golden-green breast shield and triangular silver feathers on its crown.
Each feather is described by dozens of parallel lines, providing remarkable detail and naturalistically textured color. The male attends a terrestrial court where it shows a complex display courtship involving a dance . However, there are no informations about nests, nest-sites or clutch size. All 15 Vogelkop endemics occur as well as seven more widespread West Papua endemics and nine out of 13 restricted-range birds present in theBird’s Head region. In addition, the Bird’s Head boasts seven more widespread West Papua endemics and 13 species with a restricted range, nine of which can be seen in the Arfaks. The Bird’s Head region, which for our purpose comprises the actual Bird’s Head Peninsula plus the Bomberai and Wandammen peninsulas as far east as the so-called ‘Zoogeographer’s Gap’, harbors 15 endemic bird species, all of which occur in the Arfak area.

The northeastern region of the Bird’s Head or Vogelkop Peninsula of West Papua is made up of an isolated yet massive, more or less continuous mountain chain. The name ‘Tamrau’ applies to the western portion, bisected by the grassy Kebar Valley, heartland of the indigenous Karoon people.
It is adorned with elongated black plumes at the sides of the breast and three erectilespatulate head wires behind each eye. The female is unadorned and has brown plumage. The nest is built and attended by the female alone. The diet consists mainly of fruits such as figs, and arthropods. In courtship display, the male performs a ballerina-like dance with its elongated black plumes spread around skirt-like, right below the iridescent breast shield. During the spectacular dance, he shakes his head and neck rapidly to show the brilliance of his inverted silver triangle-shaped head adornment to attending females.
The birds are so crisp they seem to jump off the page. Parotia’s hair is short but puffy, being almost entirely black, with the upper part being black with a white part on the front and spiky on it’s sides, simulating the head of a real parotia. Two pairs of spatulate wires come out of her hair, one in each side, partially mimicking real parotias .
As with most member in the family, the female is unadorned and has brown plumage. He starts with a bow, shakes his head rhythmically, and spreads his flank feathers into a skirt—only then does he begin the fancy footwork. The so called “ballerina dance” of the male Western Parotia is a carefully choreographed display performed for any female who chooses to perch on the branch above his well-maintained court. Putting all the elements of this complex dance together takes real skill.

Most of his stunning portraits were done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the artist to illustrate his landmark works on African ornithology, including the lavish and striking Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets. Images of African birds were popular in early 19th-century France both for their exoticism and for Africa’s interest that Napoleon’s campaigns were generating. The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds. A widespread and common species throughout its range, the western parotia is evaluated as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The project was a massive undertaking, which required over 300 finished watercolors. Apart from their undoubted beauty, they display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since.
