The female is a slightly smaller than the male. In appearance, the glossy-mantled manucode resembles and is difficult to distinguished from its nearest relatives, the crinkle-collared and jobi manucodes.

Oviparous animals are female animals that lay their eggs, with little or no other embryonic development within the mother. Where possible, I will attempt to depict both male and female individuals for each taxon. Breeding season from August to March. The nest is a deep cup made of dead and dry vine tendrils or stems. It’s suspendend in a forked branch m above the ground. You are using an out of date browser.

Species that dance in the cluttered understory have more complex dances than canopy-displaying species. Taken together, our results illustrate how distinct selection regimens each operate on individual elements comprising a complex display. This supports a modular model of display evolution, wherein the ultimate integrated display is the product of synergy between multiple factors that select for different types of phenotypic complexity. The glossy-mantled manucode is a species of bird-of-paradise. The glossy-mantled manucode was the first bird of paradise encountered by the French naturalist René-Primevère Lesson, the first westerner to see live wild birds of paradise. The latter two species were elevated from subspecies status of L.

Integrated visual displays that combine gesture with color are nearly ubiquitous in the animal world, where they evolve in response to sexual selection for their role in courtship and competition. However, few studies examine how multiple selection regimens shape each component of these complex phenotypes on a macroevolutionary scale. Here we study this issue by assessing how both sexual and ecological selection work together to influence visual display complexity in the birds of paradise. We first find that sexual dichromatism is highest in lekking species, which undergo more intense sexual selection by female choice than non-lekking species. Meanwhile, species in which males directly compete with one another at communal display courts have more carotenoid-based ornaments and fewer melanin ornaments. Meanwhile, display habitat influences gestural complexity.
Five new species of the genus Picobia are described and illustrated and two avian species from the family Picidae are recorded as new hosts for P. dryobatis.
