It was sealed in plastic with a nice matte black border around the image itself. If you do not want your print framed, select ‘Matted Print Only’ in the frame options drop down list. Although I’ve emphasized the spectacular BOPs, and the extensive sexual dimorphism in these genera, there are primitive birds-of-paradise in which the sexes are similar.

- As would be expected when there is not sexual dimorphism, these species are monogamous and form pair bonds.
- Futher, two species have been split and one has been lumped.
- This has created incredible sexual dimorphism in the Paradisaeidae, and promoted rapid evolution in male plumages (Christidis & Schodde 1993).
- Modified breast shields that form unworldly cravats are features of Wallace’s Standardwing and of what was once called the “Superb Bird-of-Paradise” .

The lesser superb bird-of-paradise or lesser lophorina is a disputed species of passerine bird in the bird-of-paradise family Paradisaeidae. It is generally considered a subspecies of the superb bird-of-paradise. Molecular evidence, though, has clarified the status of some of the lesser known and more obscure species.
This one is now called Vogelkop Lophorina [unfortunately for me, I’ve only heard one]. Superba — this is the widely distributed species in the central mountains of New Guinea — and Lesser Lophorina L. Note that Irestedt et al. argue that superba does not apply to birds from the Vogelkop Mountains, but to those usually called feminina. They establish a new name inopinata for the Vogelkop birds and refer to the Vogelkop Bird-of-paradise as Lophorina niedda. They also call the Greater Bird-of-paradiseLophorina superba. Given that the type of superba has been considered to be from the Vogelkop, I didn’t find their arguments convincing.
Frith & Frith split the recently rediscovered Bronze Parotia Parotia berlepschi as the 39th BOP. And then the recent splits in riflebirds and Lophornias bring the total back of 42 species. In this gallery of three photos below, we can compare a female Victoria Riflebird as she checks out a displaying male who is engaging in loud vocalizations and in a full wing-spread display. These photos of Victoria Riflebird are by Hans & Judy Beste.
Here a female has arrived to watch — she’s the brown unplumed bird in the center, surrounded by two displaying males. There are “better” perches than others, and the male on the “best” perch usually gets the female. It may take years for another male to dislodge the prime male.
You must see the BBC video to observe the frenzy to which the male works himself up in his incredible performance. The superb bird-of-paradise displays sexual dimorphism as males have black plumage, blue-green breasts, and a cape on their back, while females are reddish-brown with a buff ventral region. The size difference between males and females is negligible and competition is extreme for mating. The superb bird-of-paradise is a polygynous bird with unusual courtship displays that involve two phases. The first phase includes simple actions and it is followed by another phase that involves a more elaborate and intense display. The male produces a loud cry to attract the female bird’s attention.

Modified breast shields that form unworldly cravats are features of Wallace’s Standardwing and of what was once called the “Superb Bird-of-Paradise” . Superb Bird-of-Paradise was recently split into 3 species and each of them was re-named as a Lophorina.
These young birds are referred to as hatchlings when they are first born. The average lifespan of these birds is between five to eight years. Welcome to BirdForum, the internet’s largest birding community with thousands of members from all over the world.
Perhaps the most famous members of the family are in the genus Paradisaea, including Blue Bird-of-Paradise . I’ve chosen it among the “best birds of the world” because it is spectacular; has an unworldly “upside-down” display ; and the fact that it is limited to a very small montane area of Papua New Guinea. I finally got photos on my third New Guinea visit , illustrated the fruit-eating propensities of the family and its extraordinary tail . The exact date of the discovery of the superb bird-of-paradise is not known, but the Vogelkop superb bird-of-paradise species was first defined by Ernst Mayr in 1930. At this time it was considered as a subspecies of the greater superb bird-of-paradise.
This fact also suggests that all the famous BOPs are closely related despite their widely variable plumages. All of our frames are made in the UK from solid wood and have a varnish or paint finish. See listing photos for details of frame options and an example of how your print would look framed.
I have marveled at both of those species in the wild. More outstanding images of BOPs are in Frith & Frith . Again, it is the BBC film Attenborough in Paradise that has remarkable footage of both of these species. The display of Wallace’s Standardwing, which occurs very high in the canopy, was filmed with an ingenious rig. That footage including maneuvers made with the white “standards” attached to the front of its wing. That same Attenborough film has the dawn display of Black Sicklebill, another “top 50” bird, that truncates its body in full display in a way that is almost impossible to believe.
The female may or may not choose to mate, and females often reject a lot of males. The entire process of courtship, including the dance, is prolonged and may take almost a day. After mating, the average litter size is one to three eggs and these are hatched after days.
As would be expected when there is not sexual dimorphism, these species are monogamous and form pair bonds. This is quite unlike the promiscuous behavior of the rest of the family. All the gorgeous, promiscuous BOPs are closely related, so much so that they may be better considered all the same genus. Under our current classification, there are many intergeneric hybrids known.
