The glossy-mantled manucode live in lowland rainforest, riverine and monsoon forests, forest edge, swamp-forest and woodlands. The Glossy-mantled manucode , is a species of bird-of-paradise. The genus name is a contracted form of Manucodiata that had been used in 1760 by the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson for a group of birds-of-paradise.

Transandean Velvety Manakin Lepidothrix velutina is split from Blue-capped Manakin L. Coronata based on significant phylogenetic and bioacoustic differences (Moncrieff et al. 2022; SACC 943). Puerto Rican Mango Anthracothorax aurulentus is split from Hispaniolan Mango A. Dominicus on the basis of differences in plumage commensurate with those between other species in the genus (NACC 2022-C-4; Chesser et al. 2022; HBW/BirdLife). Chihuahuan Meadowlark Sturnella lilianae (historically referred to as “Lillian’s Meadowlark”) is split from Eastern Meadowlark S. Magna based on morphological, genomic and vocal differences (Lanyon 1995; Barker et al. 2008; Beam et al. 2021; HBW 16; Powell et al. 2014; NACC 2022-C-2; Chesser et al. 2022). Includes auropectoralis (Beam et al. 2021). It is widely distributed throughout the lowlands of New Guinea and nearby islands. Widespread and common throughout its large range, the glossy-mantled manucode is evaluated as least concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. San Diego Zoo has the only captive individual of this species outside of New Guinea.
