Females take care of the young by themselves, without help from other birds. The male advertises by singing from several traditional perches and performs a similar display like Victoria’s Riflebird. You can even occupy yourself at home by coloring in one of our free printable paradise riflebird coloring pages.
Here is a video of the paradise bird that I recorded using Canon D-SLR camera that was equipped with 600 mm telephoto lens. Although the bird can be heard calling nearly all day, it is quite difficult to find him due to its dark feather. The range map of the paradise riflebird includes temperate and subtropical rainforests. They usually breed in wet and dry sclerophyll woods.
- The male is slightly heavier than the female with their average weights being 4.7 to 5.5 oz and 3.0 to 3.9 oz respectively.
- The male paradise riflebird performs a solitary display to females from perches of low-hanging, exposed canopy.
- Like other birds of paradise, the paradise riflebird is polyginous.
- Their scientific name and description were given by William Swainson.
Females are slightly smaller, averaging at 29 cm (11.4 in) and weighing on average 86 to 112 g (3.0 to 3.9 oz). Both genders have a long, black, decurved bill, black legs, and dark brown iris. A recent study notes that paradise riflebirds displayed in museums are mostly males, and this is likely because of their beautiful feathers and wings.
Watercolour Sketch of Bird
When the male bird is in the mood to mate they open up their wings like a fan flaunting the iridescent green-blue color of the feathers and move gracefully. It makes small hops here and there that are perfectly in sync with the head movements. They also move their head sideways while opening the beak to expose the yellow mouth. It is also said that this Australian bird has a dark appearance in order to make the iridescent blue-green sheen patches pop during the display.
It performs small hops that sync perfectly with the movement of its head. The paradise riflebird should not be kept as a pet. They are already hunted in large numbers and the population is dwindling.
We spotted it when we heard a loud rasping call, and then within seconds watched it do a mating display. With fanned wings that looked like a velvet pleated cape, he threw his head back and pranced, flashing his iridescent plumage. The breeding season of these species start in September and ends in the middle of February. Males impress their potential mates through a courtship display.
It is highly vulnerable to deforestation and rainforest fragmentation due to its sedentary lifestyle and low population density, and has lost much of its original habitat. Currently, it is listed as a species of Least Concern, though its numbers are declining. The female paradise riflebird raises offspring alone.

Dark-spotted anacon…
There has been little record of juvenile appearance. Juveniles of both genders resemble the adult female, with gray-brown feathers. Sometimes I find myself melting and perspiring, slapping at relentless mosquitoes, wandering around in a smelly, dark rainforest wondering why I am here.
The male is known for its powerful “yaassss” call, often repeated once at a time and lasting around 2 seconds. Endemic to eastern Australia, the Paradise Riflebird is distributed to rainforests of New South Wales and central Queensland. The paradise rifle bird is among the world’s most exotic birds. Also known as Victoria’s riflebird, it was named after the late queen of the United Kingdom. The paradise riflebird is evaluated as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. If these practices don’t come to an end then they might soon reach the thresholds of vulnerability. The paradise riflebird range map includes subtropical and temperate rainforests. They like to breed in sclerophyll woods, both wet and dry. The rainforest is relatively close to the sclerophyll woods. They also inhabit Mountains and foothills, as well as adjacent wetter eucalypt forests, which are also home to them.

When it’s the start of the breeding season, you can see them in pairs, and the females are not usually seen in groups of 5 or 6 when foraging. According to recent research, the majority of the birds in the museum collection were males. The eye-catching paradise crow feathers and wings are, unfortunately, one of the main reasons for its hunting.
